Biggest Suction Sail Installed by Bond4blue in Dutch Cargo Vessel

Description
Bond4blue, an engineering company prominent in the wind propulsion sector, achieved a milestone in maritime history by developing and installing the largest suction sails. The company has successfully installed the suction sail on a Duch-flagged Eems Traveller, a 2,850-dwt general cargo vessel owned by Amasus. This is the biggest installation of fixed suction sails on a ship as of today in the maritime industry.

The propulsive efficiency of the suction sail is increased by the use of a thick aerodynamic profile and smart suction, resulting in a system that produces seven times more lift than an airplane wing.

The suction sail installation involved two main execution stages. It was first installed in the scheduled regular dry-dock of the vessel. The highlight was the verticalization manoeuvre and connection to the reinforcement of the sails were completed in less than four hours. The installation process has undergone continuous monitoring and validation. The outcomes are recorded and assessed by a third party to assess the fuel and emission savings results in the next 12 months. Based on these recommendations the reliability of the suction sails can be assessed for further future development.
